History
The Saint James Club opened its doors on July 14, 1857. Taking its inspiration from the great English club tradition, it provided a welcome gathering place for the leading members of Montreal society at a time when their influence and power were increasing.
The Saint James is the oldest private club in Montreal, and one of the oldest in the country. It was named after St. James Street, where the first clubhouse was located and where many of Montreal’s first business deals were concluded.
From its downtown location, the St. James Club has looked on for nearly 150 years as Canadian society has evolved and changed. Initially a haven of male camaraderie and fellowship, it has evolved into a strategic gathering place for men and women from the Montreal business community.
Moreover, since the1970s, the Saint James Club has incorporated women in the administration committee. In 1990 Mrs Jean A. Bernard was named the first president and more recently the Club welcomed its first female General Manager, Mrs Andrée Vincent.
Ever since its early beginnings, club members have actively participated in the economic, social, and cultural development of their city, of Quebec and the rest of Canada as a whole.
